Can anyone at home and in the current dam footprint check their letter boxes? Apparently, new letters have been delivered to some areas today. If you have one can you post the letter here for us to all read?

I just picked up a copy of the letter from the Kandanga info centre. I'll re-type the whole thing in a few minutes. First I want to highlight 2 paragraphs, which show just what a sham yesterday's announcement was.

So they're going to build both stages at once, just not use stage 2. But we can trust them, right? I am an engineer by profession, and I can tell you that this is NOT how you do things. If stage 2 is not going to be used for 30 years (or not at all) you defer the costs and don't build it till its needed.

So they plan to resume everyone's properties - Stage 1 and Stage 2. It's just that some will be able to stay on as tenants for 5 years, and some for 20. |

Residents whose properties are affected by Stage One will be able to remain on their properties until the dam is completed. This is scheduled to occur by late 2011. This means that while the Government will purchase all properties offered for sale immediately, former owners will have the right to remain on their land for approximately five years.
The Government is prepared to pay landowners the full value of their properties now and lease them back until the dam is complete - on a heavily concessional basis. This will allow landowners to lease-back the property at either a set rate of 3% of the unimproved capital value, or $1000 per annum, whichever is the lower.

A Councelling hotline is also available 24 hours per day. The councelling hotline provides for confidential advice and support seven days a week. The number is 1300 667 791. I urge you to take advantage of these support services if you require them.
We will soon be appointing a Community Guardian who will be able to assist anyone impacted by this development and ensure that concerns are heard and addressed in a timely fashion.
A new, high level taskforce will be established to review community, employment and business options for the future.
Our goal will be to allow as many as possible to remain in the region surrounding the dam and to ensure that the local economy is strengthened to take advantage of the new opportunities presented by the dam in the medium to long term.
In the first instance, the taskforce will concentrate on protecting people from social and economic disruption caused by the dam project.
It will support local businesses to maintain existing operations and create new jobs for the future.
The taskforce will work with local residents, business and governments, community leaders, stakeholders and other government departments to develop and implement a medium and long term plan to ensure community sustainability.

Local economy strengthened? What a crock!
new opportunities presented by the dam? Like what. Open air mud wrestling championships? Tourist trips through the ghost-town of Kandanga?
What are we all complaining about. This dam will benefit us.  |
