A little off topic, but I thought worthy of inclusion considering this whole DAM issue needs THINKING of the lateral kind like this. EDUCATION is a key that opens SO many doors.

Noosaville service station operators have added a new twist to discount fuel schemes, replacing grocery savings with a means for drivers to offset the environmental impact of their vehicles.

The scheme, which is tipped to soon go national, is the creation of Hilton Terrace Service Centre proprietor Brett Robb.

Rather than savings on their groceries, motorists get to see their 4c/litre saving help grow organic gardens at primary schools.

The environmentally-conscious father of four has teamed up with Edible School Gardens coordinator Leonie Shanahan, who has already established permaculture gardens at eight Sunshine Coast state schools.

The initiative fits with Mr Robb’s philosophy of “think local, act local’’ and offers residents a way of positively offsetting their fossil fuel impacts.

“Like me, many people can’t afford a hybrid car but would still like to offset their environmental impacts,’’ the Lake MacDonald resident said.

“This is, in effect, a meaningful carbon trading scheme that has the potential to positively influence so many more people through the school system.’’

Ms Shanahan said organic gardens converted the carbon emitted by vehicles into chemical-free fruits, herbs and vegetables.

“This is about carbon offsetting and creating a generation of healthier, happier kids who better understand where their food comes from,” Ms Shanahan said.

“This is about breeding the next generation to be less wasteful, more productive and sustainable than we have been.’’

Mr Robb is in the process of finding business partners to help him carry the 4c/litre subsidy.

Customers who wish to have the money diverted to the scheme must sign up with the centre’s loyalty register and are given regular updates via email on the progress of the gardens, carbon emissions saved and other data.

Noosa councillor Frank Wilkie said he believed many environmentally-aware residents, currently bound to motor vehicles through necessity or choice, would support the scheme.

“Brett’s initiative demonstrates exactly the type of lateral, win-win thinking that must define our future,’’ he said.

“Everything we do affects others for better or worse. Given the informed choices, most people will always opt to do the right thing,’’ he said.
